Vermeer favourites the Consone Quartet return with a programme of late Beethoven string quartets. These works truly pushed the limits of string quartet writing, and indeed, string playing of the time. Beethoven seemed to be grappling with philosophical questions as he approached the end of his life, writing in the manuscript of the op. 135 quartet Muß es sein? (Must it be?) followed by the answer Es muß sein! (It must be!) later in the movement, words which were quoted in by Milan Kundera in The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
